American Red Cross Lifesaving Classes
Classes are held at the Lakeland Courthouse and taught by certified American Red Cross instructors. The minimum age of participants is 15.
Lifeguard classes meet: Monday - Friday 6 pm until 10 pm; Saturday 8 am until 5 pm; and Sunday 1 pm until 5 pm.
This curriculum consists of a minimum of 32 hours of instruction. All classroom and pool sessions are mandatory. Any missed instruction may negate certification.
To enroll in the Lifeguard Course you must be 15 years of age, or reach 15 before the last scheduled class session. There will be a swimming skills test the first night of class. Before beginning the Lifeguard or Lifeguard re-cert, course you must:
- Swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating the front crawl and breaststroke.
- Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10# weight from 7-10 feet of water, hold the object while swimming back to the starting point, and exit the pool without using any ladder or steps. This must be accomplished within one minute and forty seconds.
Upon successful completion of the curriculum participants will receive the following certifications: Lifeguarding / First Aid (r.06), CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (r.06), Administering Emergency Oxygen (r.06), and Bloodborne Pathogen Prevention Training (r.06). As time permits, all or some of these modules will be added: Epinephrine Auto-Injector use, Asthma Inhaler use, Suctioning, and Advanced Airway Management. This Lifeguard course curriculum is the revised edition (r.06), released 1/1/07. All new Emergency Cardiac Care guidelines and updated rescue protocols have been incorporated along with new textbooks and videos.
Utilizing quality instructors and instructor trainers, excellent facilities, the latest in rescue equipment, and close teacher-to-student ratios the Courthouse Racquet and Fitness Club is the only facility in Mississippi currently offering this comprehensive, updated American Red Cross Lifeguard certification package.
The cost for the full certification is $195.00 per student. Lifeguard/CPR/AED re-certification is $110. CPR/ AED re-certification only is $30. Please make any checks payable to the Courthouse Racquet and Fitness Club. Payment is due the first night of class.
Youth Swim Lessons
Private and group swim lessons are available at each Courthouse facility during the summer and year-round at the Lakeland and Northeast locations for ages 3 and up. Click here for more info on our youth Swim Lesson program.

Summer Swim Team
The Courthouse is a member of the Jackson Swim Association (JSA), a league of 11 local swim teams. This 6-week summer swim team begins May 30 at Lakeland, Byram, and Cypress Lake. The focus of our summer swim team is to have fun and learn the strokes properly. Our coaches have years of experience and love working with children.
Lakeland only. Each participant must be a member and pay $20.00 extra per month. Instructor provides individual attention and group workouts organized to fit the needs of a wide variety of swimmers abilities. There are additional fees to join the national

Association Card and pay $5.00 guest fee each visit.

Workouts: Varied. There is a freestyle-only workout with every practice and the expected distance swam varies on your ability and goals. Usual: 2,000-4,000 yards.
The Courthouse is pleased to have swimgirl, Laura Uecker instruct adults at our Lakeland and Northeast facilities.
